Regional Resources for New

and Experienced Farmers

 

The Kansas City Food Circle is a volunteer alliance of consumers and producers that works to strengthen ties between local producers and consumers. It publishes a directory of local food producers, runs annual  farmer exhibitions, and recently set up a bulletin board for direct producer-to-consumer networking.

 

The state-funded Food Circles Networking Project of the University of Missouri has a major goal of strengthening local food systems in Missouri, and has worked in the Kansas City area to establish farmers markets, and strengthen linkages between restaurants and growers, among other things.

 

The Kansas Rural Center (KRC) is active in efforts to strengthen local food systems and to serve farmers in Kansas. 

 

The Kansas Center for Sustainable Agriculture and Alternative Crops provides a comprehensive list of links related to local and regional sustainable agriculture issues.

 

The Missouri Alternatives Center provides comprehensive links and information on alternative agriculture topics.

 

Multiple extension efforts and publications by both Kansas State University and the University of Missouri are aimed at strengthening grower skills in local food production and marketing. 

 

The Kansas City Center for Urban Agriculture promotes entrepreneurial farming in the Kansas City area and operates the Kansas City Community Farm. They provide support and assistance to urban growers, and put together the Urban Farms Tour.

The
Great Plains Vegetable Conference and the Mid-America Fruit Growers Conference are noteworthy cooperative regional efforts by extension and grower organizations that are relevant to strengthening grower skills for local production and marketing in Kansas City.

 

ATTRA is an important source of up to date information for growers interested in sustainable production practices.

 

Growing For Market is a valuable publication for market gardeners.

 

Organic Volunteers is a web site that helps volunteers and interns link up with training opportunities in organic agriculture.
