Juniper Gardens Training Farm is a 9-acre site just minutes from downtown Kansas City, KS and right across the river from Kansas City, MO. In partnership with Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas, we co-manage the New Roots program, helping resettled refugees and new Americans start and operate independent farm businesses that supply healthy produce to feed our community. In addition to New Roots, Juniper has 18 community garden plots, 5 program graduates leasing plots on-site, and a large staff plot.
The collaboration between Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas and Cultivate KC helps individuals with an agricultural background in their home countries adapt to Kansas City climate and culture while supporting their families.
Our trainee and graduate farmers use organic principles and sell their produce to local restaurants, at farmers markets and through Farm Share subscriptions.
Apprentices will:
Assist farm staff in planting and maintaining a staff demonstration plot on site.
Assist farm staff with site maintenance and groundskeeping: weed-whacking, mowing, mulching, infrastructure maintenance, and pest management.
Assist farmers-in-training with purchasing materials and tools from the on-site Farm Store, and tracking purchases and IOUs using Square and other communication tools
Assist in coordinating workshops/ hands-on educational demonstrations throughout the season
Assist the Graduate Support Specialist on visits to graduate farms when appropriate to observe and evaluate any special needs or projects.
