Mike Pearl is a fifth-generation farmer and owner of Pearl Family Farm, which has been in his family since his great-grandfather Dave Pearl (born into slavery) purchased the land in 1890. Mike is a graduate of the University of Kansas and New York University. Prior to “coming back” to the land to continue farming, Mike was an award-winning Advertising and Direct Marketing Executive. Mike has extensive experience in larger-scale food production and sales. Mike has direct sales experience at the biggest farmers market in Kansas City. He brings a wealth of experience, generational knowledge, equipment and high tunnel expertise. Pearl Family Farm is an African American-owned farm using integrated pest-management, extensive crop rotation, nitrogen -fixing legumes, cover crops and plastic culture to help regenerate soil biology.
Mike has extensive experience with livestock and row crops, but now he currently grows over 30 vegetables. Mike is an active member of the community as he serves on the KC Food Hub Board, KC Farm School Board, KC Farm School Farmers Coalition. In 2022, he was voted Farmer of the Year at Overland Park Farmers Market. Mike is an aggressive advocate for equity for disadvantaged farmers and the preservation of the Pearl Family Farm for the next generations.
